REVIEW: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8: #1 – The Long Way Home, Part 1

Buffy Season 8 #1 Cover

WARNING – Minor spoilers ahead.

I picked up the first issue of the new season of Dark Horse’s Buffy from Blake at House of Heroes last Friday and read it before dinner. In a word, it’s AWESOME. If you’re any sort of Buffy fan at all, you’ve got to visit your nearest comic emporium and place a standing order.

Considered canon for the Buffyverse, the new series takes place around 18 months after the end of the TV series, with Buffy and the gang now based in Scotland and running a network of Slayer squads across the globe. We’re reintroduced to most of the remaining Scoobies – Buffy, Xander and Dawn – and made aware that Willow and Andrew are about as well. While we’re not yet aware who the Big Bad is to be, we are given a hint or two…

At a standard 32 pages, it’s only about 10-15 minutes of reading, but nonetheless, it’s a welcome return for this old friend. And with Joss Whedon at the helm, we can only hope for great things ahead. The pencils, inks and colors are awesome – not quite as beautiful as something like 1602, but still very good with lots of nice shading and contrast. Buffy’s never looked hotter than when she’s in skintight combat pants and military boots (they’d have to be Oakley SI Assault 8″, wouldn’t they?).

Even my wife, Alli, who’s never read a comic in her life (but had recently finished watching all seven seasons of the TV series) picked it up, read it and then asked, “When’s the next one?”

Oh, and Dark Horse have some really nice promo paintings for the series available as wallpapers.  I’ve always had a soft spot for Willow, and lordy is she HOT in this one!
