Robert Rodriguez is a freakin’ genius

Sin City (official site, imdb.com) opened in Australia last Thursday. I saw it last night when my wife, Alli and my daughter were out having dinner with some work friends af Alli.

I have to say that I have been really looking forward to this film since I first started seeing preliminary trailers for it on Apple Trailers. I wasn’t disappointed – like the entry title says, Robert Rodriguez is a genius!

The film is a technical marvel, truly evoking Frank Miller‘s work on paper. Suffice it to say that Rodriguez, Miller and "Special Guest Director", Quentin Tarantino have woven together something magical, where the pages of the comic are the movie. If you’ve seen any of the side-by-side comparisons of the film and some of Miller’s drawings, you’ll know what I mean.

I don’t want this to be a review, so let’s just go with (for those not familiar with the film or graphic novels) the fact that Sin City weaves together several storylines from the graphic novels, so we have a number of featured protagonists, with Bruce Willis (in his best role for a long time) as Hartigan and Jessica Alba as Nancy Callhan as the two main threads across the entire film – all the other stories touch them in some way. Other featured players are Mickey Rourke as Marv (I thought Mickey had retired to a whiskey bottle somewhere) and Clive Owen (man, this guy is cool!) as Dwight. Alongside these, an illustrious cast of well-known actors, but strangely, just one of them is a Rodriguez regular (I deeply lust after Carla Gugino… she gets my vote as hottest Mum ever for her role as Ingrid Cortez in Rodriguez’s Spy Kids series).

Every role is perfect, every player spot on. It’s just faultless. If you haven’t yet seen it, so yourself a favor and go to the theater. Or, if your’re lucky and live in the US, pick it up on DVD when it comes out in a few weeks.
